Water Issues

Our area of the country has been dealing with a serious lack of waterfall. Water bans are rampant and our water resources are running dangerously low. According to a story in the Athens Banner-Herald, the local reservoir only has enough water in it to last about 50 days and rivers are running too low to replenish it. This is one of the worst droughts we have faced in 100 years, and it looks like there is not much hope around the corner.

Citizens of Athens-Clarke County and surrounding counties are not permitted to use any outdoor water with no exceptions. A violation of the ban in Athens could cost you $1,000 or even loss of your water services. Businesses that rely on water supply for their livelihood such as car washes will be allowed to continue business as usual at this point.

This level 4 water ban might be an inconvenience, but the importance of the water supply that could be needed for public health and safety issues takes precedence.

I like that you linked the page that has all the great tips for conserving water. I will have to admit that I don't pay much attention to trying to use less water. I know for women, as the tip page said, if you turn the water off in the shower when you shave your legs then that would save a lot. You can fill a cup with water to rinse your blade in. That is something I have been meaning to do. With a little more thought we could all cut back tremendously on our water usage.

Quality water is such an important component of good health. We take this for granted. In times like these, we are forced to think about the important job folks in our water department and water purification section in particular play in all of our good health. Third world countries struggle to get this basic need in order, and we can see the health problems they experience as a result.

I'm shocked at the people who consider this too much of an inconvenience. What do they plan to do when we run out of water?

I wish the Banner Herald/Red &
Black/Flagpole would run an article on how to conserve water.

I've been recycling my bath water to water my plants.
